SECASTILLA VALLEY:
THE BEST SECRET OF
VIÑAS DEL VERO

The Secastilla valley is located in Somontano's far northeast region and enjoys a special Mediterranean microclimate well-suited for grape, olive and almond cultivation. This unique setting, where history and tradition come together, is blessed with the most magnificent natural surroundings sure to leave visitors pleasantly surprised. When walking among the valley's gall and holm oaks, pine trees and junipers, through slight hillsides and terraced areas, it's easy to witness vultures, goshawks, owls and even badgers, roe deer, foxes and wild boar.

The area's origins date back to the 1st Century BC, founded by Romans who had settled in the village of Labitolosa, between the Cinca and Esera Rivers. They began to plan the first vineyards in that period, giving way to highly regarded wines. The name "Secastilla" comes from the Latin "Septcastelum," referring to the seven castles (Muñones, Castro, Torreciudad, Ubiergo, Bolturina, Mendaleya and Secastilla) that ruled over the land, defending the territory from Muslim invaders. It is still possible to see what remains of these ancient nuclei from the tower of the San Pedro de Secastilla’s church.
