LATE HARVEST.
When this term appears on the label of a bottle, it means that the wine has been made with grapes harvested later than usual and that, it therefore presents higher sugar levels. It is normally associated with dessert wines and vine stocks affected by the “noble rot” (see botrytis cinerea).
LEAN.
This is often used as a synonym for austere. It may indicate that it is a wine which lacks fruity flavours.
LEATHERY.
Noble fragrance of some red wines due to their reductive ageing in the bottle.
LEES.
Sediment which remains in a barrel or vat during and after the fermentation.
LEGS.
Term which is used to refer to the viscous drops which are formed and slip down the sides of the glass when the wine is swirled around in circles.
LIVELY.
Wine in which clean aromas and a certain freshness are noted. Also said of sparkling wines with pleasant bubbles.
