GOLDEN.
Describes the colour of a wine and is a sign that it is mature and may fade. It is a negative sign in young red (or white) wines.
“GRAN RESERVA”.
Name which some wineries give to the wines aged for a long time in oak barrels and in bottles. Although it varies, depending on the area, it should have an ageing of more than three years.
GRAPE.
Fruit of the vine. It is calculated that some five thousand different varieties are cultivated in the world.
GRAPE-LIKE.
Wine characterised by simple flavours and aromas associated with fresh table grapes, distinct from the more complex fruit flavours (raisin, blackberry, fig or apricot) which are found in select wines.
GRASSY.
Typical characteristic of Sauvignon Blanc, which is pleasant unless it becomes dominant and acrid.
GREEN.
Wine with a taste of green fruit or which has been produced from grapes which have not fully ripened. It may be pleasant in the Riesling and Gewürztraminer wines.
GREENNESS.
Sensation of an immature wine, which has not yet developed to the extent of harmonising its acidity. It has an astringent character, often dominant, and it usually develops when the wine is kept in fermentation for too long with the stalks of the grapes.
